Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is located along the Patuxent River in South Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Jug Bay has over 1,000 acres of wetlands, mature woods, fields and meadows. There are miles of trails, streams, tobacco barns, farm fields and panoramic views of the Patuxent River.
Artists can choose to paint for the entire weekend or just one day.The Sanctuary will open early, 7am on Friday and Saturday. The usual admission fee will be waived for artists. Please visit the Jug Bay Website to see a trail map. Note that good painting spots can be found at the River Farm, Marsh Boardwalk, Otter Point, River Pier, the Observation Blind on the Railroad Bed Trail and the Overview adjacent to the Wetlands Center Visitor Center. You can print out a copy of the trail map and find the sites mentioned above. There are also countless other paintable views at Jug Bay.
Artists will have vehicle access to the parking lot at the Wetlands Center, 1361 Wrighton Rd. as well as the River Farm (see www.jugbay.org for directions to either location). Gates to the Wetlands Center usually close at 5 pm, we are working on a plan to keep the gate open later for artists during this event. We will keep you posted on this and other developments.
There will be a reception at the Visitors Center on Sunday afternoon, hosted by the Friends of Jug Bay with refreshements and live music. Artists will have the opportunity to display and sell paintings with 20% commission going to the Friends. A $10.00 per artist donation is requested to defray costs, payable the day of the reception.
The Friends of Jug Bay will be providing a hot lunch for participating artists on Sunday, Nov. 1, at noon. If you find that you are unable to participate, please let us know as early as possible so that we know how much food to prepare.
Paintings will be displayed on easels and table tops in and around the visitors center. You might want to bring small table top easels or other devices that can be used to prop your paintings for viewing. Please be patient and understand that this arrangement will be somewhat improvised. Paintings can be framed or unframed.
There are no limits on the size or number of paintings that you may display, but for practical reasons we suggest that you paint small and dont' plan to show too many paintings. Ultimately this will be a judgement call on your part. Sales will be handled by the artists. Commissions will be paid by the artists directly to the Friends of Jug Bay.
