Call to Artists for St Michaels
"Paint the Town"

For the past four years, the town of St. Michaels has celebrated “Paint the Town (PTT) Day,” which invites artists to explore the nooks and crannies of this charming historic Eastern Shore town and capture its essence in paintings.  This year, the St. Michaels Art League announces two exciting bits of news:  the 2011 Paint the Town events will be held from Saturday, October 1st through Saturday, October 8th,  AND…over $600 in cash prizes will be awarded!   If you’ve ever visited St. Michaels in the fall, you’ll know that it’s an especially beautiful time, with colorful seasonal activities taking place – and cool, crisp weather.   All this AND $600 in prizes?  This will be the perfect setting to create art – or to watch art being created!

As always, this year’s week-long event will be held “rain or shine” and is open to all residents, guests and visitors over the age of 13 years.  The centerpiece of Paint the Town day on October 8th will be the “Paint-Off” competition.  To participate in the “Paint-Off,” artists may paint anywhere in town, on October 8th ONLY, between 8:00am – 12:30pm:  along Talbot Street, the harbor, side streets, indoor as well as outdoor scenes, still life, people, boats, gardens, etc.  At 12:30, artists will bring one finished painting and an easel to the lawn of St. Luke’s Methodist Church on Talbot Street opposite the Post Office.  Paintings will be judged, and cash prizes will be awarded.  A casual reception with light refreshments will follow immediately, and the art will be available for sale at the completion of the judging.

To allow participation in Paint the Town by artists who may not be available to paint at the “Paint-Off” on October 8th, the “painting days” are being extended to include the week prior to the event (October 1-7), with the same subject matter guidelines -- but these paintings will only be eligible for the November PTT Exhibit at the St. Michaels Library.  (“Paint-Off” artwork is also eligible for the Library Exhibit.).  Registration for the Paint the Town is only $10.  Pre-register now by downloading a form from the Art League website, www.stmichaelsartleague.org, or artists may register on October 8th for the “Paint-Off” at the registration table on the lawn of St. Luke’s Church.  Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as only the first 38 artists registered can be guaranteed a space in the Library exhibit.

Paintings in the PTT Library Exhibit will be displayed at the St. Michaels Library from November 1st-30th.  Entries will be judged and winners announced at a reception at the Library on Thursday, November 3rd, from 5:30-7:00pm.  In addition, “The Commissioners” award will be announced, selected by the St. Michaels Commissioners as the painting that best captures the spirit of St. Michaels.  Cash prizes will be awarded at the reception and the public is cordially invited to attend.
