Hanami – Japanese Picnic and Celebration of Blossoms Paint Out

Host: Kathy Shiota, Co-Chair of the Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee

   email: kshiota1@gmail.com

When: Saturday April 14, 2018 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Where: Middle Branch Park

3301 Waterview Ave.

Baltimore, MD 21230

Event Discription:

Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee along with Baltimore Rec and Parks, and Flowering Tree Trails of Baltimore, invites you to join the first-ever Hanami in Baltimore, celebrating the arrival of spring beneath a canopy of pink blossoms along one of Baltimore's finest waterfronts in Middle Branch Park. Bring your blanket, a picnic, and your cultural curiosity. Come to learn about the Japanese tradition of celebrating underneath the Cherry Blossoms. The whole family is welcome and it’s free.

Artist Details:

We are hoping some plein air artists might come to the picnic, and set up and paint while the cherry blossoms are in bloom. This is a custom in Japan during the picnics in public parks, where people and artists gather right at the peak of blossoms.

Middle Branch Park is a lovely park, and the Rowing Center building will be open, so artists would have access to water. We can also help you with supplies if needed.

We anticipate good weather but the designated rain date will be the following day, Sunday, April 15, at the same time. Bring your own picnic lunch and a camera for selfies in the park!

How to Register:

Please contact Kathy Shiota via email to register so she can best direct you towards available facilities when you arrive. Registration on Eventbrite is optional but welcome. Just make a comment that you're an artist when you register.
