Preserving America’s colorful Canal era and transportation history, the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park is 184.5 miles of adventure.  At the Great Falls Tavern a replica canal boat pulled by mules operates during the spring, summer, and fall.  A short distance down the canal towpath, the Potomac River builds up speed and force as it falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and flows through the narrow Mather Gorge. Mather Gorge can be viewed from the bridge on the Olmsted Island trail.
